Stay Loose: Hot Tub Massage and Chronic Lower Back Pain

How Hydrotherapy Can Help

Jacuzzi

Anyone suffer from lower back pain out there? How do you manage lower back pain? Does your hot tub help with the pain?

Here are some comments from our customers:

  • “Oh yes it does!!! Powerful jets massage my whole back, the heat soothes sore muscles. Our Jacuzzi is wonderful”
  • “New Jacuzzi owners and bought it because of my chronic back problems…it has helped.”
  • “its a blessing- with or without back troubles.great to de-stress, relax & unwind.”

According to survey results released in 2012 by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)1 nearly two-thirds of Americans experience low back at some point in their lives.

Anyone who owns a Jacuzzi® hot tub knows that the warm-water therapy feels incredibly soothing on tender or tense back muscles, and it can also be an effective way to gain some control over lower back pain. Hydrotherapy revs up circulation to soothe muscles and relieve pain symptoms faster. It also promotes spine flexibility; stiffness of the spine, from sitting too much, for example, is often identified as a cause of lower back pain.

Our research convinced us that a hydrotherapeutic massage from hot tub jets may be a good tactic for overcoming lower back pain:

  • A study comparing hydrotherapy and land-based exercise for lower back pain stated that both are helpful, but “hydrotherapy seems to be better for spinal flexibility.” The Journal of Musculoskeletal Research, Vol. 13, Issue 04, Dec. 2010
  • Applied heat expands blood vessels, improves circulation, helps to relax muscles and reduce pain, according to an article about hydrotherapy and pain relief2 on The American Cancer Society’s site. “Warm water in the form of a bath, massaging water jets, or hot tub also provides relaxation and stress relief,” it says, and… “An analysis of studies done on hydrotherapy for lower back pain suggested that it might be helpful, although further studies are needed.”
  • Other studies have also concluded that while more research is needed, “hydrotherapy currently remains an attractive treatment modality for low back pain to improve aerobic conditioning and initiate spinal stabilizing efforts.”

The APTA recommends learning strategies for preventing and relieving back pain (72 percent of those surveyed use pain medication to relieve their symptoms). Jacuzzi hot tub hydrotherapy encourages the body to use its own responses to handle back pain. With a Jacuzzi hot tub in your backyard, you can fight chronic pain with regular hydrotherapy sessions, and feel better naturally.

Slow Down Hectic Schedules

Develop a Hot Tub Habit

Why is it that when the weather cools down at this time of year, our schedules heat up? Driving the kids back and forth to school, making sure your home and yard are ready for winter, and putting in long hours at the office now that summer vacation is over, can all make the fall season pass by in a swirl of leaves.

But for families who have a hot tub in the backyard, the shift from carefree summer to busy autumn can be a time to build new, stress-reducing routines and bring everyone closer together.

Ease the transition into autumn.
When the days seem to be racing by (is it really dark at 6 o’clock?) a hot tub session can help to slow them down. Notice how an afternoon business meeting or helping with after-school homework can leave you feeling wound up and under-energized at the same time? There’s nothing like hot tub hydrotherapy by to bring you back into balance. Spending just 10 minutes in a hot tub can help you relax and put your day into perspective.

Head for the hot tub together.
Your school-age kids will look forward to hot tub time after their homework is finished or when they’re worn out from soccer practice. Get dad and kids together for a hot tub session after raking leaves or watching football on TV. And sure, younger kids like to splash, cup their hands over the jet stream, and bounce from one seat to another. But sharing time in the hot tub with your kids makes it easier for everyone to relax and communicate more openly– especially teenagers.

Warm up to the chill in the air.
You can really appreciate the crispness of autumn and the beauty of fall colors when you’re relaxing in your hot tub. All you have to do is step outside into your own backyard or onto your deck and you’re there. With the days ending earlier, you’ll have time to relax in your hot tub before bed. A cool, dark evening and a warmly lit hot tub go together beautifully, and you’ll both sleep better after a soothing hydromassage.

This fall, take a moment to marvel at the Harvest Moon, sneak a couple of pieces of Halloween candy, and find out how good it feels to soak in your hot tub on a regular basis. It’s a healthy habit that can help you skate through the rest of the year more smoothly.

Connect with Nature to Reduce Stress

Hot Tub Hydrotherapy Includes Benefits of Being Outdoors

Hot Tub Hydrotherapy and Mother NatureMother Nature has remarkable therapeutic powers. All you have to do is step outside into the sunshine and take a few breaths of fresh air to notice how the stress of being in the office seems to float away. Unfortunately, walking to and from the car is about the only time some of us spend outdoors on a regular basis. But if you have a hot tub in the backyard, you can soak in the beneficial effects of the great outdoors along with the amazing effects of hot tub hydrotherapy.

Research studies have shown that being outdoors can reduce stress. Levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that works to regulate moods, rise when we are exposed to natural light outdoors, according to an article by Simon N. Young, published in the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience. The man who coined the term “road rage,” Dr. David Lewis, discovered through research that the scent of grass had a calming effect on frantic drivers. And an article in the New York Times on July 6, 2012, extolled the health benefits of spending more time in nature, including enhanced immune function.

Need for Stress Reduction During Men’s Health Month

Jacuzzi Hot Tubs Emphasizes Awareness of Preventable Health Problems

Along with the celebration of Father’s Day and the start of summer, June marks a special period designated by Congress for increasing awareness of men’s health problems and their prevention. Jacuzzi Hot Tubs joins the education efforts during Men’s Health Month by pointing out the positive effects of hot tub hydrotherapy in reducing stress and promoting other healthy benefits.

Studies have shown that stress can contribute to health problems, such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Underlying tension and stress may make it harder to get a good night’s sleep, and it can cause symptoms of chronic muscle tension, pain and fatigue. Effective hydrotherapy, such as that delivered by Jacuzzi® hot tubs, works by loosening muscle tightness, relieving pressure on joints, and increasing circulation. According to Jacuzzi Hot Tubs, regular hot tub hydrotherapy (the combination of heat, buoyancy and massage) can help reduce stress, make it easier to relax, and promote better sleep.

“Promoting Men’s Health Month is a natural for Jacuzzi Hot Tubs. We are in the business of helping people relax, and June is the perfect time to point out that our hot tubs are not only for entertainment; hot tub hydrotherapy can help reduce stress and enhance wellness on a daily basis,” says Nate Mangum, Jacuzzi Director of Brand and Channel Marketing.

Happy National Golf Month!

Golfers Relax and Recover in Hot Tubs

We celebrate National Golf Month every August because we have so many hot tub owners who are also golfers. It makes sense because hot tubs and golf go together naturally. The therapeutic effects you get from a Jacuzzi hydromassage after a round on the course can help loosen up stiffness in your legs and back, relieve muscle pain and soreness, and promote relaxation and recovery. Also, before you hit the driving range or the front nine, take time for an invigorating massage session in your hot tub – your body will be warmed up and ready for the first swing of the day.

Why Families Love Hot Tubs

The Best Place to Relax, Play and Connect

As tough as it is to find time for yourself these days, it can be a real challenge to get family members together to relax, reconnect and just hang out. It’s rare to find an activity that’s liked by everyone, from the kids to grandma. A big hot tub can change that scenario. Whether you’re having fun at a backyard gathering or enjoying a solo relaxation session, big hot tubs offer big benefits to families.

Adults love to relax. Put the kids to bed and steal a few moments in your Jacuzzi hot tub together. Relaxing together in warm water is said to make it easier to share romantic thoughts.

Kids just want to have fun. It’s been shown that children who share in outdoor activities are likely to develop the habit of staying active. Mom and teens relaxing in the warm water, dad cooking at the grill, little kids playing nearby… a big hot tub can be the focal point of a healthy, family-centered lifestyle.

As days lead up to a marathon, training runs become longer and the body adapts to the physical stresses of running harder and running farther. Throughout the course of training, the majority of runners experience some sort of muscle soreness. Sore, achy muscles can not only make training uncomfortable, but it can also be difficult to stay on track. The good news is that there are ways to relieve muscle soreness, including recovering with Jacuzzi patented hydrotherapy suited for the needs of physically active people.
